Do You Have Enough Oil In Your Lamp?

I’ve been thinking about lamps and oil. Yep, thinking again 🙂 We love it when I do that, don’t we? All joking aside – the Lord asked me a serious question, “Do you have enough oil for your lamp?”

Matthew 25:1-13 tells the story of the 10 virgins waiting for the bridegroom. 5 of them had a surplus of lamp oil, but the other 5 did not bring enough. Those that did not have enough left to buy more oil, and those who stayed were allowed into the marriage feast with the bridegroom. Verse 13 concludes the story “So you too must keep watch! For you do not know the hour or the day of My return” (NLT).

I saw a room filled with lamps of all kinds: oil, electric, wax, battery operated. As I looked closer I could see many of the lamps were not lit. I investigated and saw that they were either out of oil, the wax had melted, the batteries were dead, or the electrical outlet was no longer functioning. Walking around the room I began to see angels gathering up the non-working lamps and putting them into a very large container in the back of the room. Each lamp they picked up to move seemed to cause them great sadness, but they were diligent in their work.

I then went to inspect the burning lamps. They oil filled lamps seemed endlessly filled with oil, no chance they will run out, the candle wax lamps did not appear to burn down, the battery operated lamps were fully charged and the batteries were discharging slowly, and the electrical lamps were vibrating with the current. Each lamp had a vibrant glow that captivated and drew me in. There was warmth, safety and welcome in the lamplight. Even the angels brightened with joy as they moved about the room and into the light of the lamps.

Do you have enough oil for your lamp? Our Bridegroom is coming, and this vision/Scripture has a deep message. When we let the cares of this world weigh us down, when we put great importance on the message of man, when we allow our selfish desires and when we focus on distractions we cause our lamps to run out of oil. We lose the connection that provides the heavenly store of oil to keep us ready and watching for our Bridegroom.

We are the light of the world, we must not light our lamp and then hide it under a basket. We must set our lamp on a stand for all to benefit from (Matthew 5:15).

I heard the Lord say “Do you have enough oil in your lamp? Draw nearer to Me for replenishment, stay in sync with My Spirit and wait for Me. Do not hide your lamp, do not look to buy more oil. When you stay close to Me, your Source, you will have an overabundance of oil, enough to remain watchful. Your Bridegroom comes soon, will you be ready?”

We live in a day where it is ever imperative that we seek to hear from the Lord for ourselves, through prayer, praise, worship, reading His word and fellowship. We must continue to draw closer to Him and to remain in the shadow of His wings. Watch, pray and keep your lamp lit.

I had a dream early the morning of 04/29/2012. In the dream my wife and I were in bed sleeping and it was very late. Our door bell rang and I remember saying to my wife, “who would be ringing our doorbell at this late hour. We both got up to see who it was. What was odd was that each of us had an old-fashioned hurricane lamp, the kind you fill with oil, as our light . When we opened the front door, we saw an angel standing there with a jug of oil in his hands. He filled our lamps and told us that the time is short.
