Today’s word is “salt”. I see piles of salt all over the place, with baskets next to each. Inside each basket is a cup for scooping salt.

Aside from the obvious references to salt in Scripture, I looked up the word “Salt” and came across this Scripture: “And every offering of your grain offering you shall season with salt; you shall not allow the salt of the covenant of your God to be lacking from your grain offering. With all your offerings you shall offer salt” (Leviticus 2:13 NKJV). After digging a little deeper, I discovered that Israel was not in a place where grain was easily accessible, and thus this particular offering was a great sacrifice for them. To add salt to the grain symbols purity and preservation, but also longevity – for God is a covenant keeping God and His faithfulness lasts forever.

Now, we are no longer required to present actual offerings such as this since Christ took our place, but we can look at this symbolically. Jesus called us “the salt of the earth”. Therefore, we are to permeate our spheres with purity and preservation, by loving and serving where we are, with hearts of joy and sacrifice. When we love and serve out of our excess, we tend to forget the cost paid that enabled us to do so; however, loving and serving from a place of sacrifice, it becomes an offering pleasing to God. This, in keeping with His faithfulness, creates an atmosphere of thirst within our sphere of influence and we find ourselves desiring more of Him. And salt, as you know, creates thirst.

Shalom! ♥
